Released in March 2021, this is the new flavor from the ROCKSTAR PURE ZERO series, ROCKSTAR PURE ZERO LIMON PEPINO.

The combination of lemon-lime and cucumber, inspired by Mexico and similar regions, is a flavor rarely seen in Japan, making it a very American-style offering from this energy drink brand.

Upon opening, the citrusy lemon-lime aroma is immediately noticeable, along with a faint grassy scent. This green note likely reflects the pepino, a cucumber-like melon, used in the flavor profile.

Upon tasting, the lemon's acidity is not overpowering, complemented by the sweetness of limeade, and the refreshing, cucumber-like note of pepino lingers.

While the lemon and lime flavors aren’t entirely authentic, there’s a hint of sweetness reminiscent of mixed fruit juice and sugar, similar to lemonade and limeade. And it’s delicious.

The balance between the refreshing cucumber flavor and the surprising zero sugar taste is excellent. While this flavor might not become a long-term bestseller, personally, I really enjoy it.

ROCKSTAR PURE ZERO LIMON PEPINO Design

Since PepsiCo’s acquisition, the Pure Zero series has featured a cool, white and silver design. For this product, there’s no lemon yellow, only a yellow-green color that reflects the pepino concept.

The design is not particularly striking. It’s a simple color differentiation, and it’s a bit disappointing that the design lacks any flair.

Even though new products like this are launched, it’s hard to get excited because the design is essentially just a different color.

In-store, the big star logo faces forward, obscuring the flavor name—a major flaw that the design team hasn’t addressed.

With cans lined up just by color, it’d be nice to see a design overhaul to bring back the cooler look of the original Pure Zero series.

Rockstar has frequently revamped its designs, and there’s been a lot of inconsistency, especially with the tab variety, making it unclear what direction the brand is taking.

During this period, Rockstar typically used black-star logo tabs, but for some reason, the Rockstar Pure Zero Limon Pepino features a blue tab with the old RR logo, which was not supposed to be used for color tabs. This inconsistency is puzzling, and I wonder when the design will stabilize.
