ROCKSTAR PURE ZERO #TMGS TWIST

Posted on August 18, 2019 | Last updated February 9, 2025

ROCKSTAR PURE ZERO #TMGS TWIST
The second release of the AMPM-exclusive Pure Zero series #TMGS, “#TMGS TWIST,” debuted in the summer of 2019 in the United States. It's a mysterious product since AMPM didn't promote it online for a while after it hit the shelves.

While the regular Pure Zero series features a single base color, the AMPM-exclusive #TMGS incorporates a gradient design, giving it a special feel.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of ROCKSTAR PURE ZERO #TMGS TWIST

Upon pouring into a glass, the orange color is surprising. The refreshing blue and green of the can are nowhere to be seen... I had imagined the inside would be a refreshing blue.

When I take a sip... there is a sweet fruit mix flavor with a distinctive tartness from the strawberry, but the other flavors are quite mild.

Since it’s a zero-calorie, zero-sugar drink, there’s naturally no fruity taste, just the flavor of a sweet syrup. While calling it a fruit mix sounds good, if you were expecting the taste of fruit or fruit pulp, you might be disappointed. Additionally, the aftertaste leaves a strong artificial sweetener flavor, so those sensitive to it might find the taste lacking.

What is the flavor of ROCKSTAR PURE ZERO #TMGS TWIST?

ROCKSTAR PURE ZERO #TMGS
The first release of the Pure Zero #TMGS series in 2018 had the flavor listed on the can, featuring a mix of tangerine, mango, guava, and strawberry.

This time, the flavor is not listed on the can, so I was curious about what it would taste like until I tried it. Finally, in August, official information was released! It turns out to be the exact same mix as the previous #TMGS: tangerine, mango, guava, and strawberry.

This time, lime has been added to create the “#TMGS TWIST.” Lime, huh... While I occasionally drink “strawberry lime” flavored energy drinks, #TMGS TWIST is not quite like that, and you can hardly feel any of the refreshing or tangy lime flavor.

Rather than overthinking it, it’s best to load up on ice and gulp it down to enjoy the clean flavor.

Energy Ingredients of ROCKSTAR PURE ZERO #TMGS TWIST

Contains 240mg of caffeine, 2000mg of taurine, 100mg of glucuronolactone, 50mg of inositol, milk thistle, ginseng, and guarana.

Although it’s a zero-calorie and high-caffeine drink, the impact is significant, but recently, Rockstar’s “Xdurance Series,” with 300mg of caffeine and zero calories, has been released, so I feel like the Pure Zero series doesn’t need to go this high in caffeine.

Design of ROCKSTAR PURE ZERO #TMGS TWIST

The can’s gradient design is unique to the #TMGS series within the PURE ZERO lineup, and this time, the #TMGS TWIST features a beautiful gradient from ocean-like green to blue. Since it was released in summer, the color scheme reminiscent of a beautiful ocean likely captivated many people.

However, it’s a bit disappointing that the inside doesn’t match the appearance. (´・ω・`)

“#TMGS” is an abbreviation for AMPM’s catchphrase, “Too much good stuff,” and the hashtag is included because it’s an AMPM exclusive. It’s possible that when #TMGS TWIST is released across the U.S. in the new year, the “#TMGS” logo will be removed and replaced with the flavor name.

With a silver top and green tab, the can design is quite well done. While the green top might also be nice, the silver top gives it a lighter, zero-calorie feel, and perhaps it’s the right choice.

Comparing the Original #TMGS and #TMGS TWIST

ROCKSTAR PURE ZERO #TMGS TWIST
When comparing the cans and glasses side by side, the original #TMGS coincidentally has a color that matches the pink of the can, with a lovely murkiness that creates a beautiful atmosphere (*´ェ`*). On the other hand, the #TMGS TWIST’s can and contents don’t match, which makes it look somewhat wasted. I wish the contents had been a cloudy blue.

Now, let’s compare the flavors. Both are fruit mix-based, but the emphasized flavors differ.

The original #TMGS starts with the sweet and tangy taste of strawberry, followed by the refreshing flavors of tangerine, mango, and guava. There is almost no taste of artificial sweeteners. I was once again impressed by how well-balanced the fruit mix flavor is. The tangerine’s sweet, juicy flavor, especially in the middle, is outstanding, and it creates a well-balanced fruit mix flavor overall.

In contrast, the #TMGS TWIST emphasizes the strawberry flavor, bringing out the sweet and tart taste of strawberry pulp and seeds, offering a wonderful experience on the palate. However, before the other fruit flavors can spread, the taste of artificial sweeteners emerges, and the flavors and scents of the other fruits are barely noticeable. The fruit mix feeling is overshadowed by this subtle sensation.

While both flavors are based on the TMGS fruit profile, in terms of completeness, I’d say the #TMGS TWIST is a bit lacking. I even think it might have been better to try a completely different flavor, such as “Kiwi Twist.”
