In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of ROCKSTAR RECOVERY MANGO LEMONADE
Opening the can releases a sweet and refreshing peach aroma. I hadn't checked the flavor beforehand, but upon closer inspection, it's actually mango and lemonade. The scent gives off a different impression than the name suggests. Let's take a sip and see how it tastes.
As expected from the aroma, the taste is predominantly peach. There is a slight hint of mango as indicated in the name, but the peach flavor is more prominent. The lemonade aspect is almost nonexistent.
Additionally, the aftertaste carries a distinct, somewhat unpleasant scent. This isn't from artificial sweeteners but rather from the collagen. If you've ever tried collagen powder, you might recognize this unique, somewhat off-putting smell.
In short, there's a noticeable and unusual aftertaste that most drinks don't have. However, as you keep drinking, you start to get used to it, and by the latter half of the 473ml can, it becomes less noticeable.
With collagen and coconut water included, this drink may also be off-limits for those who dislike the unique taste of coconut. The combination makes for an exceptionally distinctive beverage.
It's not necessarily bad, but the strong and peculiar taste and aroma make it quite divisive. Many might prefer a standard Recovery drink over this collagen-infused version.
Energy Ingredients of ROCKSTAR RECOVERY MANGO LEMONADE
Contains 160mg of caffeine, 3g of collagen, and taurine. With 3g of collagen, it makes sense that there's a bit of a distinct taste.
The fact that it’s sugar-free and ultra-low in calories is a plus. If you don't mind the unusual flavor and aroma, this is a drink you could consume regularly without guilt.
Design of ROCKSTAR RECOVERY MANGO LEMONADE
The vivid orange color stands out, giving it a bold and energetic presence. A closer look reveals detailed designs featuring a lion and speakers.
The bright orange paired with the silver star creates a light, dynamic impression, reinforcing the low-calorie aspect.
From late 2022, new releases started including small flavor labels at the bottom of the can.
Previously, the cans lacked a front-facing flavor description, which was a major design flaw. This change was an improvement, and by 2023, all Rockstar cans adopted this design.
The can’s top prominently displays “Collagen,” a key feature of this Recovery series.
Most other Rockstar drinks list their caffeine content in this space, but here, collagen takes the spotlight.
Given the low-calorie nature, it seems like Rockstar might have been targeting women interested in beauty benefits. However, the branding doesn't explicitly convey this, which feels like a missed opportunity.
If this was meant to appeal to a beauty-conscious female audience, the design doesn’t quite align with that market. A deeper look into the product reveals some areas that could have been better refined.
Ultimately, the collagen-infused Recovery line quietly disappeared. The flavor may have been too peculiar, or perhaps the collagen concept didn’t resonate with the right audience. Additionally, Rockstar's overall market share decline may have played a role in its discontinuation.
