ROCKSTAR RECOVERY ORANGE
ROCKSTAR’s Recovery series features a non-carbonated, low-calorie formula designed to revitalize the body. This is the orange flavor.
Since the launch of the Recovery series, this non-carbonated orange flavor has been loved for nearly 20 years. It's surprising that such a common orange flavor has remained on the market for so long, despite being several times more expensive than regular orange juice.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of ROCKSTAR RECOVERY ORANGE
Upon opening, despite containing only about 3% juice, it has a natural, real-orange-like aroma. Unlike the typical image of an energy drink, it leaves a gentle impression with its mild orange scent.
When you take a sip, you're greeted with a light, smooth, and mellow sweetness that wraps around a subtle tartness, creating a refreshing orange flavor.
The tartness and aroma give it a natural orange feel, while the aftertaste is crisp and hydrating, characteristic of a low-calorie, low-sugar drink.
It's easy to see why this flavor has remained available for so long—it truly embodies the "revitalizing" sensation that the Recovery series is known for.
Overall, the flavor is refreshing and natural. However, since it's non-carbonated, it may feel slightly less refreshing compared to carbonated options. This comes down to personal preference.
Personally, this mild yet fresh orange flavor is something I always turn to the morning after returning from a trip. It revitalizes both body and mind, making it one of my go-to energy drinks post-travel.
Energy Ingredients of ROCKSTAR RECOVERY ORANGE
Contains 160mg of caffeine, 2000mg of taurine, milk thistle, ginseng, and other ingredients. The juice content is 3%, made solely from oranges.
Design of ROCKSTAR RECOVERY ORANGE
The Rockstar series has changed designs frequently over the years, especially as its popularity began to decline. Following its acquisition by PepsiCo in 2020, the design quality has continued to deteriorate. The transition of these designs over the years is documented in a chronological overview.
2014 ROCKSTAR RECOVERY ORANGE
This was the design when I first reviewed RECOVERY ORANGE in 2014. Personally, this is my favorite version.
The background features the "ROCKSTAR" logo repeated in different shades of orange, creating a bold and stylish energy drink aesthetic.
The combination of black, white, and the orange flavor color is well-balanced. The use of white adds contrast, while the black around the logo and text, along with the black top, gives it a sharp, well-defined look.
The earliest designs were shared with Rockstar's juice-based series and represented the pinnacle of their aesthetic appeal. Even after more than a decade, no design has surpassed this one. Unfortunately, since the PepsiCo acquisition, Rockstar’s design choices have only worsened.
2022 ROCKSTAR RECOVERY ORANGE
This is the 2022 design. The can is dominated by a massive mirror-finished silver star, covering about two-thirds of the surface.
When displayed front-facing on store shelves, the "ROCKSTAR" logo, product name, series name, and even the flavor are all obscured, making the design completely nonsensical.
The color scheme consists of orange, black, and silver. The removal of the outline around the "ROCKSTAR" logo and the large star results in a lack of contrast, giving the can a dull and indistinct appearance.
The prominently displayed caffeine content suggests a response to the growing market of high-caffeine energy drinks. From a consumer perspective, having the caffeine amount clearly visible may be beneficial when choosing an energy drink.
The top of the can lists the energy ingredients.
The entire can is covered in an unrecognizable pattern. There is a large speaker design that is somewhat distinguishable, but beyond that, it's unclear.
Most notably, the flavor name—arguably the most important detail—has been placed near the back of the can in an awkward, hard-to-read vertical orientation. It's surprising that this design was approved for retail display.
