ROCKSTAR REVOLT KILLER CITRUS
Released at the end of 2015 exclusively at Speedway and other stores in the United States, Rockstar Revolt Killer Citrus. When I visited Las Vegas in November, it hadn’t yet spread, but by December, it started to become available gradually in the Midwest and East, and as of 2016, it has spread across all areas.

This is a drink that became a topic of discussion due to its design, which seems to be in competition with Monster.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of ROCKSTAR REVOLT KILLER CITRUS

With its cool camouflage design and the name "Killer Citrus," expectations were high, and upon opening the can, a refreshing citrus aroma burst out along with the carbonation. The scent is strong, but it’s not overpowering and is very refreshing (*´ェ`*)

When poured into a glass, the drink has a light, transparent color reminiscent of a sports drink. It’s a pretty standard color, I suppose.

The taste is primarily the familiar sweetness of a sports drink. It has a rich sweetness, but there’s almost no aftertaste, and the sweetness doesn’t feel overwhelming. The overall flavor is a mix of this sweetness with a slight bitterness and sourness, enhancing the umami.

Now, let’s take a closer look at the taste. A delayed bitterness, like lemon peel or orange peel, can be felt, and alongside the sweetness, a soft tonic-water-like bitterness is subtly enjoyable (*´ω`●)

While it was a faint citrus aroma while drinking, the lemon scent was quite strong from the can after finishing, suggesting that the bitterness and citrusy flavors are influenced significantly by this aroma.

Energy Ingredients of ROCKSTAR REVOLT

It contains 240mg of caffeine, taurine, ginseng, guarana, and milk thistle. With such a high amount of caffeine, be cautious if you drink other energy drinks before or after having Revolt.

With 64g of carbohydrates per can, along with the vitamin B group and 240mg of caffeine, Revolt might be a good choice before hitting the gym.

It contains 2% fruit juice, so it seems like there’s some orange in it. The peel-like bitterness and slight sharpness could be due to this, which is interesting.

Design of ROCKSTAR REVOLT

The vibrant green camouflage pattern doesn’t look cheap, thanks to the matte finish of the can, the perfect color balance of green, black, and white, and the cool Revolt font. Rockstar’s designer definitely knows how to hit the right spot.

However, the vertical design here is a bit of a letdown. The Revolt font is ruined. I wish they had used the same font as the front logo, just like other Rockstar cans. Apart from that, it’s almost perfect.

The 240mg caffeine label is clearly displayed on the front for high-caffeine products. I believe there was a discussion in the U.S. in 2015 about making the caffeine content clearer. Especially for Rockstar, which has many products with 240mg of caffeine, this label is likely to remain.

The tab is black, which goes perfectly with the vibrant green top (●´ω`●) It’s green, but making it black could also make the overall design look more cohesive.

By the way, the name "Revolt" probably hints at M-100, right? Considering it’s a product line competing with rival products, it would be interesting if the Revolt series continued, given the excellent, stable, classic flavors (*´艸`*)

Comparing Killer Citrus in Different Countries!

I compared the Revolt Killer Citrus from the U.S., Canada, Germany, and the UK in 2017.

U.S. & Canada

ROCKSTAR REVOLT KILLER CITRUS
First, let’s compare the U.S. and Canada. There’s almost no color difference. It maintains a transparent yellow color. The taste is also similar, with a mellow citrus bitterness and sweetness forming a balanced flavor, with no major differences. If anything, the Canadian version has a slightly subdued bitterness and feels more refreshing with its sweetness. The U.S. version seems to offer a bit more of a bitter taste, but unless you compare them side by side, there’s hardly any noticeable difference. Both have a fruity sweet-and-sourness that’s quite delicious (●´ω`●)

U.S. & Germany

ROCKSTAR REVOLT KILLER CITRUS
Now, let’s compare the U.S. and Germany. This was a completely different experience. Unlike the mellow sweet-and-bitter citrus flavor of the U.S. version, the German one has a lime and lemon flavor with sharp sourness, keeping the sweetness to a minimum. The German version has almost no sweetness, and the flavor is all about lime acidity, without the bitterness found in the U.S. and Canadian versions.

U.S. & UK

ROCKSTAR REVOLT KILLER CITRUS
Now, let’s talk about the UK’s Zero Killer Citrus. This is the zero-sugar version of Killer Citrus, so I have a separate review for it, but I’ll briefly mention it here for comparison.

Although it looks similar to the German version with its stronger sourness, it has a bit more sweetness than the German one, and the balance between the sourness and sweetness makes it much easier to drink. Compared to the U.S. version, the color is different, and there’s no bitterness, but the UK Zero Killer Citrus might be easier to drink overall.

Major Differences Between North America and Europe

After comparing the Killer Citrus from four countries, the most noticeable difference is the completely different concept between North America and Europe.
ROCKSTAR REVOLT KILLER CITRUS
You can easily tell just by looking at the color. I’ve lined up the four glasses, from left to right: U.S., Canada, Germany, and the UK.

In the U.S. and Canada, you can enjoy the mellow sweetness with a citrus bitterness from lime, orange, etc., but Germany focuses more on lime’s acidity, and the UK, despite being a zero-sugar version, has a stronger sweetness that balances the sourness, making it easier to drink.

It’s rare to do such a comparison all at once, but it’s fun to realize the surprising differences when you try them all together (●´ω`●)
