ROCKSTAR XDURANCE KIWI STRAWBERRY
ROCKSTAR's high-caffeine XDURANCE series has been renewed, bringing significant changes to both the product name and its contents. So, I'm reviewing it again. This is now the third generation of Kiwi Strawberry (^_^;)
*In 2021, the design was updated, giving it a completely new look. While the packaging has changed, the contents remain the same as the third generation. This review provides a great comparison from the first generation, and since the fourth generation was discontinued as of 2023, I will keep these photos as they are and add images of the fourth generation separately.*

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of ROCKSTAR XDURANCE KIWI STRAWBERRY
When poured into a glass, it has a cloudy, transparent color. The original XDURANCE Kiwi Strawberry had a red liquid, but starting from this third generation, it has been changed to a colorless, transparent formula. It seems like this change aligns with the trend of many high-caffeine energy drinks being clear.
The flavor is a rich, mellow sweetness reminiscent of strawberry candy, with very little tartness. Although the name is "Kiwi Strawberry," the kiwi flavor is almost nonexistent.
Despite being a zero-calorie, zero-sugar drink, it leaves a strong sweet impression and a lasting aroma, making it quite satisfying. The artificial sweeteners don’t have any unpleasant aftertaste, and many people might not even realize it’s sugar-free.
Even when chilled with ice, the sweet strawberry flavor remains strong.
When ice-cold, a subtle kiwi note lingers in the aftertaste. However, when chilled only to regular refrigerator temperature, the strawberry sweetness dominates, overshadowing the kiwi. So, I recommend serving it with plenty of ice (*´ェ`*).
Energy Ingredients of ROCKSTAR XDURANCE KIWI STRAWBERRY
It contains 300mg of caffeine, along with 50mg of valine, 200mg of leucine, 50mg of isoleucine as BCAAs, and 4mg of CoQ10. The key difference from RIPPED RED KIWI STRAWBERRY is that it does not include creatine.
The gluten-free and vegan labels were already standard in 2019, appearing on many energy drinks.
Kiwi Strawberry Flavor Comparison
Three versions of Kiwi Strawberry have been released so far: two variations of RIPPED RED KIWI STRAWBERRY and the current KIWI STRAWBERRY without "RIPPED RED."
From left to right: the first generation, second generation, and third generation. Each has a different release period, can design, ingredient profile, and flavor.
This time, the name has changed from "RIPPED RED" to just "Kiwi Strawberry," and the formula has also been significantly altered. So, I tried all three generations for comparison.
First Generation
The first generation was characterized by strong tartness. To be honest, it was hard to say whether it really tasted like strawberry. It had no sweetness, just strong acidity, making it difficult to imagine a sour strawberry flavor. The aroma, however, was sweet and strawberry-like, creating a strange contrast between scent and taste.
Second Generation
In the second generation, the tartness was almost completely removed, and the sweetness was intensified. With the increase in sweetness, the kiwi flavor became nearly undetectable. The aroma remained distinctly strawberry-like, and combined with the sweetness, it started to resemble strawberry candy.
Third Generation
The Kiwi Strawberry reviewed this time has a deeper, sweeter aroma and flavor. The zero-calorie, zero-sugar feel is even less noticeable, and the taste is so well-balanced that it almost seems like it contains real sugar. Compared to the previous two versions, it feels like a more complete and refined product. The renewal was definitely a success.
The design has also changed significantly. Previously, the color scheme was black, red, and silver, but now it has been updated to black, red, and pink.
Even though the liquid inside is no longer red or pink... (^_^;) Maybe keeping the silver would have been a better choice.
The XDURANCE series frequently changes its design and formula, which might confuse consumers. With three generations featuring significantly different flavors, it’s easy to imagine a scenario where someone who loved the tart strawberry taste of the first generation picks up what they think is the same drink, only to find it's the much sweeter third generation instead.
For collectors who enjoy the variations in can design, this ongoing evolution might be interesting, but for the average consumer, such frequent changes can be a bit frustrating.
Fourth Generation ROCKSTAR XDURANCE KIWI STRAWBERRY
When the entire Rockstar series underwent a design overhaul, ROCKSTAR XDURANCE KIWI STRAWBERRY also adopted the new XDURANCE branding. However, its color scheme changed so drastically that it looked like an entirely new product. This shocking redesign was short-lived, as the drink was discontinued in 2023. Here’s a look at the fourth generation.
The previous red-themed Kiwi Strawberry now features a lime green base, reflecting the kiwi aspect, with pink accents around the logo to represent strawberry. This color scheme truly matches the "Kiwi Strawberry" name.
However, the flavor remains predominantly strawberry, with only a faint hint of kiwi lingering in the aftertaste (and mostly staying hidden). There is no noticeable difference from the third generation.
This raises the question of whether it should even be called the fourth generation. However, given the drastic visual change, it looked completely different from the previous ROCKSTAR XDURANCE KIWI STRAWBERRY on store shelves. For clarity, I’ll refer to it as the fourth generation. In fact, when I first saw it in stores, I assumed Rockstar had launched a new XDURANCE flavor.
