ROCKSTAR ZERO SUGAR

Posted on June 14, 2023 | Last updated February 1, 2025

ROCKSTAR ZERO SUGAR
This is the ROCKSTAR ZERO SUGAR released in Germany and Australia.

The original blue design, released in Germany, features the same look as the American ROCKSTAR ZERO CARB and the Canadian ROCKSTAR BURNER, but with its unique product name, "ROCKSTAR ZERO SUGAR." (Note that the design was revamped the following year.)

In addition to Germany, this same ROCKSTAR ZERO SUGAR is also available in Australia, so this review will compare the old and new versions released in Germany with the Australian ROCKSTAR ZERO SUGAR.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of ROCKSTAR ZERO SUGAR

Upon opening, a sweet and sour cherry candy-like aroma fills the air. The scent doesn’t seem to differ much across the versions.

From left to right, we have Germany 2012, Germany 2013, and Australia 2013. From this angle, the colors appear to be the same, but I believe you can notice some slight differences when viewed from above.

The rightmost Australian version features a vibrant red similar to North American drinks, while the German versions have a more subdued color.

Let’s take a sip.

The common flavor across all versions is a mix of cherry and berries, with a rich cherry flavor and a tangy red berry aftertaste.

Building on this shared base flavor, the German version has a stronger sourness. The Australian version, on the other hand, has a stronger taste of artificial sweeteners and a more noticeable bitterness from yerba mate.

Although all three versions are labeled as "Tropical Fruit," none of them really taste like tropical fruits. Describing the flavor as cherry & berry seems more fitting.

Energy Ingredients of ROCKSTAR ZERO SUGAR

Energy Ingredients of ROCKSTAR ZERO SUGAR
Each can contains 160mg of caffeine, 2000mg of taurine, and 120mg of glucuronolactone. The Australian version also contains yerba mate, just like the North American version. The bitterness I noticed when drinking the Australian version is indeed from the mate tea.

Design of ROCKSTAR ZERO SUGAR

Let’s take a look at the design of each version of ROCKSTAR ZERO SUGAR. From left to right: Germany 2012, Germany 2013, and Australia 2013.
Design of ROCKSTAR ZERO SUGAR
First, the blue design on the left, from Germany, was released in 2012 and matches the design used in the United States and Canada.

The following year, Germany refreshed this blue design to a white one. In 2013, the Australian version of ROCKSTAR ZERO SUGAR, which was released the same year, also adopted the same white design as the second generation of the German version.

Though it’s different from the design in the U.S. and Canada, the white design might actually convey the "Zero Sugar" aspect a bit more effectively.

Let’s take a closer look at the flavor label.
Design of ROCKSTAR ZERO SUGAR
Both the old and new German versions indicate that they are sugar-free and feature a tropical fruit flavor. The Australian version, on the other hand, includes 1g of carbohydrates.

The flavor name on the Australian version is listed toward the bottom of the can as "Tropical Fruit Flavor."
Design of ROCKSTAR ZERO SUGAR
The positioning and color of this flavor label are quite similar to the initial version of ROCKSTAR XDURANCE from the United States.

Here’s how the tab and top colors look.

The Australian version has a black top, suggesting that it may have incorporated some of the best aspects of the ROCKSTAR XDURANCE design.
