In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of SEMTEX Cool
Upon opening, there is surprisingly a normal, traditional, chemical-like scent, though it feels quite mild.
The liquid is a deep, dark green. This doesn’t look like a drink... It’s a color that doesn't allow any light to pass through, truly the color of poison, a pond filled with algae.
Hesitantly taking a sip, I found it to taste like a sour, vitamin-based carbonated drink with a slight chemical flavor. The chemical taste is very subtle, almost like an accent.
The chemical flavor while drinking doesn’t linger much, but the strong sourness remains in the aftertaste, leaving a slight residue.
Is it delicious as a drink? It’s rather questionable, and I get the feeling the flavor wasn’t the main focus. This is because it actually dyes your tongue green—far more intensely than expected.
The back of the can shows a green tongue, and I came to understand that SEMTEX Cool isn’t about the taste at all—it’s just an energy drink meant to turn your tongue green.
Exactly like this.
Energy Ingredients of SEMTEX Cool
It contains 160mg of caffeine and 2000mg of taurine. These are typical amounts for energy ingredients. I thought it might contain some dangerous food coloring, but it seems like everything is safe, which was a relief. I don't think anyone would drink this regularly, but SEMTEX Cool was sold for nearly two years. (^_^;)
Design of SEMTEX Cool
A simple can with the SEMTEX logo, and the back has a green tongue design.
Among the SEMTEX series, this one is especially simple, but the strong impression is that this is an energy drink made just for the purpose of turning your tongue green, more than for taste or design. As a result, it was discontinued after just one generation.
Here is the commercial from back then. Well, it was clearly a novelty product. I can’t imagine wanting to drink this regularly.
It had a green tab. The same tab as SEMTEX CRAZY. They probably just reused existing green tabs. Although SEMTEX has become much more consistent lately, the older SEMTEX products had some surprisingly careless elements.
