In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Just a Sweet Mocha?
True to the image of sweet American coffee, this is very sweet. The creamy, rich sweetness almost completely masks the coffee aroma and flavor.
The aftertaste surprisingly retains some coffee flavor. Compared to the Starbucks Doubleshot Energy Vanilla, this flavor is easier for Japanese people to drink, and even someone like Drin-kun, who isn't fond of the distinctive creamy sweetness, can enjoy it when chilled.
That said, it remains sweet throughout, and personally, I find it difficult to finish a can of Mocha on its own... So, I recommend drinking it with a snack to enjoy the sweetness in a more pleasant way.
Impressive Energy Ingredients
I’m not sure if I’d call this an energy drink, but the ingredients are quite substantial, regardless of the flavor.
First, it contains 1800mg of taurine, which is nearly double that of a typical Red Bull. It also contains 325mg of ginseng, 90mg of guarana, and 2000mg of maltodextrin.
Maltodextrin (MD) is also used in bodybuilding as it serves as an energy source and helps prevent muscle fatigue. While bodybuilders may consume about 20g during intense workouts, Starbucks Energy Mocha contains only 1/10 of that, but it's still interesting that they included it.
Additionally, it contains 12g of protein, which is a decent amount for a snack. For reference, protein shakes typically contain 25-30g, so this is about half that amount.
The drink also contains 145mg of caffeine, which is on the higher side, even surpassing Japanese Monster Energy drinks, given that it’s a coffee-based product.
For When You Can’t Move a Muscle (ヽ´ω`)...
However, the intense sweetness of this drink might only be manageable when you’re completely exhausted and unable to move. I occasionally drink a café mocha when I'm tired after walking around, but I wouldn't usually drink almost 500ml at once (・_・;). A 250ml can might be the perfect size.
Since I happened to be drinking it when I was feeling energetic, I couldn’t really feel any further boost, but I’m sure if I were to drink a Starbucks Energy Mocha before collapsing into bed after a long, exhausting day, I’d feel revitalized.
On the other hand, drinking this after a meal might make you feel like a champion Σ(゚Д゚;エーッ!
