Guam Energy Drink Journey
The second energy drink journey of 2016, and my first time in Guam!
I'll be reporting on my vacation in this tropical paradise, just a short flight of under four hours from Tokyo, while hunting for energy drinks.
This time, I flew with my trusted Delta Airlines, making both the departure and return trip a breeze. Unlike flights to the mainland U.S., the short travel time meant I could fully enjoy my holiday without feeling exhausted!

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Immediately Hunting for Energy Drinks After Landing!
I took a morning flight and arrived in Guam by early afternoon. From the airport, I drove around the island.
In total, I visited nearly 50 stores. I doubt anyone has ever covered this many stores in Guam before, and I doubt anyone ever will in the future.
Around the central Tumon area, there aren’t that many stores—probably around five at most. Instead of sightseeing, I went all in on exploring the island.
I had high expectations for Guam, and there were two main reasons I visited nearly 50 stores:
I hoped to find rare energy drinks left in local areas, and I thought small, scattered stores might have a good selection of Rockstar varieties.
However, all my expectations and predictions turned out to be wrong. The only good find was ROCKSTAR ICED, and that was only available in a single store. Since this was in an area tourists rarely visit, it might be hard to find now, or it could already be sold out.
Guam’s Unique Market Trends
After visiting nearly 50 stores, I started to see some patterns.
Since I'm familiar with the energy drink market in mainland America, I can usually get a sense of the situation in different regions. However, Guam had its own distinct characteristics—not just for energy drinks, but for products in general.
The selection wasn’t bad; in fact, there was quite a variety.
As seen in the photo, I also spotted XDURANCE in several stores. I debated whether to buy it but ended up leaving without one.
Since this is still America, you might expect to find expired Monster and Rockstar drinks. However, that was hardly the case. In a way, it’s reassuring to know that everything is fresh and safe to buy.
Rather than searching for rare finds, it was more fun to simply enjoy the colorful energy drink selection and the American shopping experience.
Kmart Isn’t That Cheap...
Kmart is one of the most famous spots in central Guam, and most Japanese tourists staying in Tumon probably visit it. However, despite being a supermarket, its energy drinks are slightly overpriced.
I wouldn’t recommend buying energy drinks from Kmart.
The selection was limited, but warehouse-style stores like COST U LESS had beer and energy drinks at reasonable prices. It might be best to buy drinks there and enjoy them at the hotel.
Beer was especially cheap, so I’d definitely recommend it.
Not Quite the Energy Drink Adventure I Had Planned
Before heading to Guam, I had planned to showcase the excitement of hunting for American energy drinks in a cost-effective tropical getaway just 3.5 hours from Tokyo.
However, from an energy drink enthusiast’s perspective, the trip ended up being a bit disappointing.
That said, I had a fantastic time experiencing Guam for the first time—enjoying delicious food, walking around, relaxing on the beach, and gaining insight into the island’s energy drink scene.
Overall, it was a fun and fulfilling vacation!
