Sydney (Australia) Energy Drink Trip 2016
This is my first energy drink journey to Australia! This time, I'm in Sydney.
I recommend departing from Haneda at night and arriving in Sydney the next morning, as it’s a comfortable journey with just a 1-hour time difference. Sydney's humidity is low, and the temperature is around 20°C, which makes it very comfortable compared to the humid and hot weather in Japan (●´ω`●)

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Energy Drink Situation in Sydney
Although I knew about it, visiting the local scene really made me understand Australia's energy drink situation.
In Australia, V Energy Drink holds the top market share, and I could clearly see this after visiting about 40 stores. I also frequently saw people buying V Energy Drinks in supermarkets, so it seems to be quite popular. The power of V Energy Drink is evident from their constant collaborations and impressive size variations.
Next, there is Red Bull. The shelf space is dominated by Red Bull and V Energy Drink. In some supermarkets, Red Bull had more stock or was cheaper when bought in bulk. Red Bull's efforts actually highlight how strong V Energy Drink is.
Following that, there was Mother Energy Drink, Rockstar, and Monster. My impression is that Monster is relatively weak here (^_^;) This time, I didn't buy a single Monster. You can probably tell how underrepresented Monster is in Sydney from the photos... (;´∀`)
Buying Energy Drinks in Sydney!
Australia is generally known for having high prices, but I found that supermarkets weren’t that expensive. First, I stocked up at supermarkets like Coles and Woolworths, and then picked up anything I couldn’t find at convenience stores. Sometimes, there is also IGA supermarkets, which I would actually recommend.
Convenience stores like 7-Eleven and City Convenience Store are common, and there are also small grocery stores scattered around. Since prices are not listed, it’s better to ask before buying. Convenience stores sell energy drinks for around $4.5 per can, which is quite expensive. However, they have a wider variety than supermarkets, so if you're an energy drink enthusiast, you shouldn't miss them. Rockstar and Monster are mostly found in convenience stores, so if you're looking for those, that's where to go. By the way, sometimes small stores sell them for around $2.5, so if you find one, make sure to check it out!
I visited about 40 stores while sightseeing, going in and out repeatedly.
V Energy Drink is Truly Amazing
This time, I tried to buy everything. Among them, V Energy Drink is incredibly aggressive with its collaborations, special editions, and limited-size variations. Once you start collecting different sizes, it becomes endless. I don't think a brand like this would emerge in Japan anytime soon. It’s easy to understand why there are collectors who focus solely on V.
The unique feature of V Energy Drink is that, no matter how many you buy, there’s always something new coming out. There is no other energy drink brand in the world doing this.
And of course, in food courts, V Energy Drink is everywhere. More than Red Bull!
By the way, there was also 28BLACK. It was the gold tab version, so I grabbed it right away.
Sydney is So Comfortable!
After touring all the main sightseeing spots, the weather was great and it was very comfortable. Above all, it felt so safe.
I also visited bookstores, which is a classic part of any trip... (this is a second-hand bookstore!)
I hopped between pubs... (Beers were around $7, very cheap!)
I thoroughly enjoyed Sydney from morning to late night (*´ェ`*).
I’ll probably visit again ((o(´∀`)o)) and continue my pursuit of V Energy Drinks!
