Detroit (USA) Energy Drink Trip 2017

Posted on September 26, 2017 | Last updated February 11, 2025

Detroit Energy Drink Journey
I went to Detroit, which is said to be the most dangerous city in the United States, for the second time in 2017 (●´ω`●). Until now, I had only been to the U.S. West Coast, but this time, it was my first trip to the American Midwest as an energy drink enthusiast.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

The Energy Drink Enthusiast Treated as a Suspicious Person at Immigration

12-hour flight, and I finally arrived in Detroit. Since I had a tight schedule and Detroit is not really a tourist city, I thought there was a high chance I'd be sent to the separate room... and as expected, I was sent there (^_^;)

At immigration, I answered their questions about my purpose for visiting, the length of stay, and where I would be staying. However, I was asked, "Why would someone come to Detroit for sightseeing? Isn't this for business?" I replied, "To buy energy drinks, and also visit various landmarks along the way." Even though I was telling the truth, they must have thought I was completely strange, lol. It had been about 10 years since I was last sent to a separate room.

Unlike the small interrogation room in San Francisco where I was sent before, this room was pretty spacious and had a relaxed atmosphere. Just when I thought I might be grilled, I ended up chatting with a young officer about energy drinks, and we quickly got along. The separate room experience didn’t feel like much at all, and I got my stamp. Still, no matter how many times I go through U.S. immigration, I just can’t get used to it (ヽ´ω`)

The Energy Drink Hunt in Detroit Was Modest...

The first store I entered in Detroit gave me a real sense of the Midwest with "RIP IT" (shown below in the photo). Despite the taste, lol, it's so fun to buy when there’s such a wide variety and colorful designs (*´ェ`*). However, there were so many different ones that I couldn’t distinguish between what I had bought and what I hadn’t, so I ended up missing out on quite a few (Σ(´∀`;)).

This was one of the rare 7-Elevens in Detroit. It's almost a miracle that it exists.

They even had baskets (which, if you look closely, are quite dirty), making things more convenient. It's clear that things have been changing since this year.

The selection here wasn’t anything special. You probably won’t find intense energy drink displays like you would on the West Coast. I managed to get a Mango Loco here!

I also visited a massive suburban supermarket! Rockstar was 10 cans for 10 dollars, plus the 11th can free! That's incredibly cheap (*´艸`*). I was able to get all the new Rockstar designs here. This is the real joy of being an energy drink traveler! It's a whole new level of happiness when you can buy them so cheaply, lol.

There was also a 10-pack of Assassin’s Creed energy drinks. If I lived here, I might have bought it, but as a traveler, it’s just too much to buy (^_^;)

I visited about 4 stores and then called it a day. In underdeveloped towns or rural areas, buying energy drinks is a normal struggle.
