Kuala Lumpur Energy Drink Journey

Posted on February 5, 2018 | Last updated February 11, 2025

Kuala Lumpur Energy Drink Journey
It’s been a year since I last visited Kuala Lumpur. This time, there weren't many energy drinks to hunt, so I’ve summarized how to buy energy drinks all at once. Kuala Lumpur has a limited selection of energy drinks, so it’s possible to get everything you need quickly. The safety is good, and it’s personally a recommended city.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Let’s Finish the Hunt Quickly

Kuala Lumpur Energy Drink Journey
If you stay in Kuala Lumpur, most likely you’ll be in the Bukit Bintang area, a bustling shopping district. Just like last time, I decided to stay at a hotel in the Bukit Bintang area for this trip as well. With landmarks like the Twin Towers, shopping malls, and food streets all concentrated in this area, it’s highly recommended.

If you’re heading to Bukit Bintang for the hunt, your first stop should be the supermarket. Most of the supermarkets in this area are located underground in shopping malls, not street-level stores.

Here, the selection is a bit lackluster, but you can still find most major brands at the supermarket, and the prices are affordable. What’s even better is that you can use credit cards, which is very convenient. By the way, the 500ml cans from the UK were also strangely available there.

Actually, I forgot to bring both my Japanese yen and my cash withdrawal card, so I only had a small amount of Malaysian Ringgit with me. I was truly saved by the supermarkets and restaurants that accepted card payments (;´∀`).

Hunt and Sightseeing, All in One Place

When you’re in Bukit Bintang, visiting a supermarket means you’re also entering a shopping mall, so you can take care of all your shopping and meals in one go.

If you want to visit the Petronas Twin Towers, there’s a mall called Suria KLCC right below, so you can easily drop by the supermarket while sightseeing.

The same goes if you want to enjoy shopping. Every mall has a supermarket in the basement, so you’ll be able to find all the energy drinks you need. It’s great even if you’re on a family or group trip and can’t go off on your own ( ´∀`)b!

7-Eleven is Always a Safe Bet

Kuala Lumpur Energy Drink Journey
7-Eleven carries limited-edition Red Bull cans and other unique energy drinks not found in supermarkets. If you buy major brands like Monster and Red Bull cheaply at the supermarket, you can complete your hunt by picking up any missing items at 7-Eleven.

Moreover, there are countless 7-Eleven stores scattered around, so if you happen to pop into one, you should be able to find the Malaysian energy drinks being sold at one or two stores.

Aside from 7-Eleven, I also recommend local Malaysian convenience stores like KK and FamilyMart. However, individual shops don’t tend to carry rare or old items, so there’s no need to keep entering them. Since it’s hot and humid outside, let’s quickly finish the hunt.

However, the Limited Edition Red Bull is Sold Out

After my last Kuala Lumpur trip, a new limited edition Red Bull design was released, but by 2018, it was already sold out everywhere. I think I visited almost every convenience store around Bukit Bintang. The Malaysian limited edition is so affordable... it’s no surprise it sold out quickly.

I did want to visit my favorite area from the last hunt, but I was so low on cash that I ended up staying within Bukit Bintang this time lol. I think the people collecting tips on the street had more cash than Energy Drink-kun Σ(・∀・;).

Hmm… I thought the train could be paid for with a card, but when I went to the ticket machines, there was a slot for cards everywhere. Even if I had managed to take the monorail, I wouldn’t have been able to use my card at 7-Eleven! So, even if the stock was there, I would have been in hell trying to buy it. I thought card payments would be more advanced here than in Japan, but it was a big mistake lol.

If you're going to Kuala Lumpur, make sure to have cash ready, even if it’s Japanese yen (^_^;).

Secured the DRIVE M7 Limited Edition I Missed Last Time

Kuala Lumpur Energy Drink Journey
This time, I didn’t do any flashy hunts, but I managed to secure the DRIVE M7 limited edition design at 7-Eleven, which I missed out on last time. I was worried it would sell out, but I saw it in about three stores. Thank goodness ε-(´∀`*)ホッ.

It was a shame about the Red Bull, but securing the DRIVE M7 limited edition was one of my main goals this trip, so mission accomplished. Kuala Lumpur is incredibly hot and humid, and since I’m sensitive to the moisture, I ended up cutting my hunt short and relaxing by the hotel pool (●´ω`●).

Kuala Lumpur is safe, affordable, and you can enjoy shopping and relaxing at your hotel or check out lively bars and sophisticated ones at night. It’s never boring. If you like Southeast Asian food stalls, you can definitely enjoy yourself in Bukit Bintang.

Actually, for my next trip to Kuala Lumpur, I’ve already booked the flight, so now I’m looking forward to choosing which hotel to stay at ((o(´∀`)o)).
