Los Angeles Energy Drink Trip 2018
I stayed in downtown Los Angeles for the first time in several years. I enjoyed Thanksgiving and Black Friday again this year.
Although there aren't that many stores in downtown, I was able to visit and check out a fair number of them on foot, and I was reminded that it's still a great option for those short on time (●´ω`●)

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
First, buy what you can cheaply
This is a rule for energy drink travelers. Let's buy everything we can get at a low price first!
I picked up a few Rockstar cans I didn't have. It's 3 cans for 4 dollars, so it's a good deal~ ((o(´∀`)o)) Since it's easy to buy here, I often use this place. Monster is 2 cans for 5 dollars, which isn't a great deal, so I passed on that. The Red Bull Pac-Man cans also have a bundle deal, so let's get them while we're here.
The first collaboration 4-pack of the year was still available. This year's Red Bull seems to have been struggling to sell all the collaboration cans that were rolled out nationwide. In areas where region-specific products were released, there might have been an overflow of various collaboration cans.
Rockstar Destiny 2 Forsaken is almost complete at 7-Eleven
Rockstar Destiny 2 Forsaken collaboration design cans (8 types) were almost all available at 3 7-Eleven stores in downtown. And, like I mentioned, it's 3 cans for 4 dollars, which is a great deal. When I came in August, they were just starting to appear, so I was happy to be able to collect them before they sold out (*´ェ`*)
Also, the red and blue Xdurance cans weren't available in August, but now each has its new design. I was able to complete the set of 4 new and old flavors, which was great (*´ェ`*)
And here's a bunch of Pure Zero Grape cans. Since I already have all of them, I didn’t buy them this time, but it's super easy to find collaboration cans and others when there are 3 stores around. Timing really is important.
By 7 p.m., the atmosphere in downtown had already become like it was around 3 a.m. ????
There were almost no people! Most of the stores had closed, and there were hardly any people around, so regular tourists might be surprised, but for an energy drink traveler, as long as supermarkets and convenience stores are open, it's all good! I think I had a good hunt from the start.
New Red Bull Winter Edition
And then, Black Friday! After shopping, I left downtown and went to do some more shopping. Also, a bit of hunting!
The Winter Edition was released in the U.S. too. One store had it lined up neatly. Lately, even when new products come out, fewer stores display them prominently, which is a bit sad.
This year's Winter Edition, unlike the Austrian original released in 2017, is just a plum flavor, which is a bit disappointing. That calm Winter Edition might only be available in Austria and Germany. Still, the plum flavor is pretty tasty, so if you get a chance, definitely try it!
Monster Energy was also found in some places
I already had most of the Monster Energy cans, so I didn’t feel the need to buy much, but I did pick up some of the new Ultra Violet and Mango Loco cans.
I also found the Mutant Mega Mouse (I named it that)! I got lucky with this one (●´ω`●)
By the way, the Hydro cans in the U.S. always feel too flimsy, to the point where the cylindrical shape gets all squished out of shape. I bought one that was in good condition, but the others were all ruined. I'll check again next time I'm in the U.S... (ヽ´ω`)
I stumbled upon Juice Ripper at a liquor store.
Isn’t the disorganized fridge interesting?! Stores without prices often charge 3 or 4 dollars, so I passed on this one.
And then the Mutant White Lightning. It's now 50 cents a can. It didn't really succeed, did it? I think it was an experimen
