Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) Energy Drink Trip 2019

Posted on June 19, 2019 | Last updated February 10, 2025

Kuala Lumpur, Energy Drink Journey 2019
In 2019, this year’s rainy season in Japan has been quite comfortable with low humidity! ... But once I arrived in Kuala Lumpur, it was definitely Southeast Asia. It was humid and sticky.

I came here to spend the weekend, so I kept the hunting light. I tried to avoid walking outside in the sweltering heat as much as possible, and took care of everything indoors at shopping malls and such, lol.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Imported Monster Energy

First, let’s head here.
The display here is unbelievable for Malaysia (*´艸`*)

This store officially stocks imported goods, and even with the import prices, they are reasonably priced (for a Japanese person), making them easy to purchase. I picked up a few of the new items. If Japan had something like this, underground sales wouldn't be necessary.

Looking at another shelf, I noticed last year’s Red Bull collaboration cans were still left! They didn’t sell well, huh...

This would be great news for someone who missed out on buying them during their trip. It’s a moment when people into overseas products get really excited. I had already secured some last year, so I left them behind this time, lol.

Let’s check out a classic, 7-Eleven.

Oh, new Red Bull with the import mark. Malaysia has switched over to this too.

It looks like both the new and old designs are mixed in. I feel like I got lucky arriving here just as the switch happened (●´ω`●)

By the way, the Sugar-Free version also started showing up with the new design, but I only spotted one can, so I’ll have to wait for next time to pick up both the Original and Sugar-Free versions. I plan to buy a few when I come back next time.

It was after 8 PM, and it was getting dark. Here’s what the outside looked like. Dark and a bit shady.

The view of Malaysia’s largest convenience chain, KK, and the foreign chain 7-Eleven right next to it is interesting (*´艸`*)

STING, which was recently released in Japan, had two flavors available here.

They were about 100 yen each. Such a good price (*´艸`*) I’m not usually a fan of bottled drinks, but I bought them to compare with the Japanese version. I wish they were priced around 100 yen in Japan too.

Hardly Seeing Monster Energy in Malaysia

Come to think of it, I haven’t seen any Monster Energy from Malaysia in any of the stores I’ve entered.

At this convenience store, there’s a sale pop-up, but it’s only until June…

When I opened the fridge, there was no stock left.

There were no price tags, so it seems like the stock is out, and there are no plans to restock. Could it be that Monster Energy is withdrawing from Malaysia!?

I was curious, so I asked my Malaysian friend after returning to Japan. They said, “There’s no sign of Monster Energy disappearing from Malaysia. They’re still promoting it, but some stores have stopped carrying it.”

Since I only visited about six stores, I might have been able to find some if I had gone to other areas.

This time, I quickly decided what to buy and finished my hunting. Having too many energy drinks, like in Europe and the US, can be a bit overwhelming, so I think the moderate selection in Southeast Asia is just right for a weekend overseas trip (●´ω`●)

Once the rainy season is over, I’m thinking of leisurely touring Southeast Asia.
