In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
XL Cranberry Energy Flavor
When you open it, the strong cranberry-like scent hits you right away.
The taste, however, is much milder than the scent, with no strong intensity. It's a very gentle flavor, unlike what you'd expect from a rich cranberry juice.
In Japan, this might be considered not very "energy drink-like," but energy drinks come in countless flavors. It's interesting that they introduced cranberry as the first flavor here instead of the original.
XL Cranberry Energy Ingredients
The ingredients are similar to those of typical energy drinks in Japan.
It contains 80mg of caffeine, 312.5mg of arginine, and while the exact amounts aren't listed, it seems there’s a fair amount of guarana as well.
This energy drink, which started in 2000, has a rich history just like Red Bull. While its ingredient profile may seem lackluster compared to today's high-dose energy drinks, XL Energy, which is sold in over 50 countries, has been consistent in its approach, much like Red Bull.
In Japan, only the Cranberry Energy flavor is available, but in countries like Poland, there are many more flavors, and personally, I think the colorful packaging reminds me a lot of Rockstar or AMP.
I Really Like the Packaging
As a pull-tab enthusiast, I appreciate that the pull-tab is a nice, solid red. However, since the shape is standard, if you remove just the pull-tab, you can no longer tell if it's an XL Energy drink, which is a bit sad.
Personally, I also like that there is minimal unnecessary text. The front of the can only has the basic logo, and the back has the ingredient list and a small product description. This simple design is nice because once they start adding too much text, it feels like they're over-explaining things, which tends to take the fun out of it. I like this minimalist approach.
This commercial seems to have a lot of meaning behind it.w
