Review :
The Jack Daniel's and Cola cocktail, affectionately known as "Jack Coke," has been released as a product by Coca-Cola. It appears that this product, which had already been commercialized in North America, is now available in Japan as well.
It is said that 40% of cocktails made with Jack Daniel's are mixed with Coca-Cola, so many of you may have tried this combination at least once.
Now, with the official Coca-Cola version of "Jack Coke," I’m curious about the balance of flavors and how it tastes.
Author: Energy Drink-kun
In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of Jack Daniel's & Cola
Upon opening the can, the strong aroma of Jack Daniel's is immediately noticeable. The sweet scent of Coca-Cola mixes in lightly, creating a distinct whiskey-like fragrance. Let’s take a sip.
As you take a sip, the flavor and aroma of Jack Daniel's spread instantly, and the cola flavor is surprisingly subtle. The cola doesn’t overpower the whiskey, but instead softens it, which is a nice touch.
The balance is perfect—if the cola flavor were any stronger, the richness and fragrance of the whiskey would be lost. The blend of cola and whiskey that enhances the whiskey’s flavor is spot-on. In particular, the subtle cola aroma is superb.
As the product suggests, it’s best enjoyed well-chilled, and if possible, with plenty of ice.
Not a Flavor You Can Achieve by Mixing Jack Daniel's and Cola Yourself
Coca-Cola’s official website claims that this product has a "perfect" taste, and I can confirm that after trying it.
In my experience, products that are marketed as “perfect,” “the best,” or “the result of marketing” are often not of such high quality. However, Jack Daniel's & Cola in this case has a remarkably high level of craftsmanship.
Would you be able to achieve this taste and aroma balance simply by mixing Jack Daniel's and Coca-Cola in a 1:1 ratio? Personally, I think they may have slightly adjusted the taste and aroma. The ingredients also aren’t exactly the same as Coca-Cola itself.
Alcohol Content Adjustment and Caffeine-Free
The Jack Daniel's & Cola released in Japan has an alcohol content adjusted to 7% to suit local preferences. Additionally, it is caffeine-free, unlike Coca-Cola, which contains trace amounts of caffeine.
This suggests that it might be difficult to simply recreate the same blend by mixing pre-made products together.
Given past issues in the U.S. with the combination of caffeine and alcohol, it seems the decision to go caffeine-free, even in small amounts, is intentional, likely to avoid concerns in Japan.
As for whether I’d repeat this, personally, I don’t drink cocktails or whiskey much, so probably not. However, the "Jack Daniel's & Cola" itself is highly rated for achieving a perfectly balanced blend that doesn’t overpower either flavor.
